The wonders of Bahia: culture, forest and islands

The Bahia state deserves a trip on its own. It concentrates the cultural capital of the Northeast region, islands among the most beautiful in Brazil and waterfalls among the highest in the country. This itinerary offers a travel in time in Salvador, the first capital of Brazil, which culture has clearly been influenced by the African traditions. You will then head inlands to visit an old cigar factory. You will see one of the most beautiful forest landscapes with the Chapada Diamantina National Park and finally finish your trip in Morro de São Paulo and Boipeba islands, surrounded by peacefulness and heavenly beaches.

TRAVEL BOOK

Day 1: Salvador

Your English-speaking guide and a driver will be waiting for you as you get off the plane to drive you to your hotel in downtown Salvador.

n.b. : 45 minutes’ drive
In the evening, your English-speaking guide will come to pick you up at the hotel to go to the Miguel Santana Theatre. You will watch the magnificent folkloric ballet of Bahia perform songs and dances about Afro Brazilian divinities worshiped in Salvador.
After the show, you will go to a restaurant taste Bahia traditional dishes.
You will go back to your hotel at the end of the night.

Day 2: Salvador

After your breakfast, your English-speaking guide will come to pick you up at the hotel lobby to visit the so called “Black Rome”, nicknamed like so because of the African culture influences on its traditions.
Your will start your city tour by the Ordem Terceira de São Francisco church, that has been built in the XVIIIth century.
You will then walk through the famous Pelourinho square, surrounded by colorful Portuguese colonial mansions.
You will go up the Ladeira do Carmo street to reach Santo Antonio neighborhood, and go through the Terreiro de Jesus square to the huge Art deco style Lacerda elevator. Don't resist the temptation of a refreshing “picolé” (ice cream)!
The second part of this tour will be dedicated to the “low city” at the foot of the elevator. The first thing you will see is the Mercado Modelo, a neoclassic building which was used to receive the slaves arriving from Africa. It burnt to the ground in 1986 and has then become a handicraft market.
You will finish this tour by the Bonfim church, see its railings embellished by rainbow-colored ribbons called “fitas” and enter the Miracle Room, where people bring ex-voto hoping to heal wounded family members and friends.
In the evening, your driver will bring you back to the hotel.

Day 3: Salvador - Cachoeira et São Félix

You will spend the day in the Recôncavo, the inland region of Bahia.

Departure early in the morning for a 2 hours ride to Cachoeira and São Felix, two villages facing each other on both sides of the Paraguaçu river.
During its golden age, Cachoeira was well-known for its cigar production. You will have the opportunity to visit a cigar factory and even smoke a cigar if you wish.

You will be told the villages history while walking through them with your guide. Among the colonial buildings you will visit is the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.

You will go from Cachoeira to São Felix by crossing an old ironbridge.

In the afternoon, ride back to Salvador da Bahia.

Day 4: Salvador - Lençóis

Departure early in the morning with your guide to take your bus from Salvador to the Chapada Dimantina National Park.

Your driver will come to pick you up at the bus station in Lençóis and drive you to the hotel.

Free afternoon to discover the small village and its restaurants, which serve delicious food.

Day 5: Lençóis

After about one hour walk inside the National Park, you will see the Fumaça Waterfall, one of the main attraction of the Chapada. Indeed, it is the second highest waterfall in Brazil (385 meters high), surrounded by a primary forest of eatable palm trees (Euterpe edulis).

You will then have the opportunity to swim in the clear waters of the Riachinho Waterfall before returning to your hotel.

Day 6: Lençóis

You will be driven to the Pratinha Cave, a gigantic cave where flows a transparent river. You will enjoy a bath in the river if you wish and observe the animals and plants of this surreal place.
Next stop, the Mucugezinho waterfall.

On the way back, you will make a stop at Morro do Pai Inácio to watch the sunset from this 1120 meters high rock formation. The view over the Chapada is breathtaking.

Day 7: Lençóis

Your driver will come to pick you up and drive east towards a remarkable site: the Poço Azul or "Blue Well". the Poço Azul is a cave flooded by transparent waters, where the sunlight penetrates and creates a surreal atmosphere. Before swimming in this beautiful and unique place, you will take a shower to get rid of the sunscreen.

You will then be driven to the Mosquito waterfall. A 60 meters waterfall where you can swim while admiring the surrounding nature.

You will have lunch either near Poço Azul or the Mosquito Waterfall.

Drive back to Lençóis in the afternoon.

Day 8: Lençóis - Salvador

Departure from the hotel in the afternoon and transfer to Salvador bus station.
n.b. 7 hours’ drive.

Your guide will come to pick you up at the bus station and drive you to the hotel.

Day 9: Salvador - Morro de São Paulo Island

In the morning, transfer from Salvador to Morro de São Paulo Island.
Your driver will pick you up at the hotel and take you to Salvador harbor, where you will embark and cross the Bay of All Saints. You will then take a vehicle and a fast boat to reach the island, where a local guide will take you to your hotel.

Day 10: Morro de São Paulo Island

Free day in Morro de São Paulo to enjoy the hotel facilities and the surrounding natural pools.

Day 11: Morro de São Paulo Island

Free day in Morro de São Paulo to enjoy the hotel facilities and the surrounding natural pools.

Day 12: Morro de São Paulo Island - Boipeba Island

In the morning, departure by boat for Boipeba Island.
You will take a 4 hours’ tour around the Camamu Bay. The Camamu Bay gathers an archipelago with islands very close to one another.
You will then visit Moreré and Cueira beach, before reaching your hotel in the afternoon.

Day 13: Boipeba Island

At the end of the day, you will go to Sueli’s home to learn how to cook a good “moqueca”, a traditional dish from Bahia. Sueli and her family will teach you the secrets behind this delicious dish. Around 7 p.m. you will have dinner with the family.

Day 14: Boipeba Island

Free day to enjoy the peacefulness of the island.

Among the possible activities are: boat rides in the surrounding mangrove, hiking and swimming in the natural pools of Moreré.

Day 15: Boipeba Island - Salvador

Return trip to Salvador: you will take a motorboat to Valença, where a driver will be waiting to drive you to Salvador airport or to your hotel.
